Your kidney health questions, answered

What are the early signs of kidney disease?
Plus icon
Kidney disease is often silent in early stages. Watch for foamy urine, blood in urine, swelling in legs or face, fatigue, increased thirst, and the need to urinate more at night. Regular testing is key, especially if you have diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of kidney disease.
Am I at risk for kidney disease?
Plus icon
You are at higher risk if you have diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, obesity, a family history of kidney ailment, or are above 60 years of age. Long-term use of painkillers, frequent UTIs, or a history of kidney stones also increases risk. Around 90% of people with kidney disease don't know they have it — get tested early.
What tests should I get for kidney disease?
Plus icon
The key tests are: blood pressure check, urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR), and estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR). An eGFR above 90 is normal; below 60 for more than 3 months indicates chronic kidney disease. Ultrasound and kidney biopsy may also be recommended by your nephrologist.
What is a kidney transplant and who needs one?
Plus icon
A kidney transplant is the best treatment option for end-stage kidney disease. Dr. Vishal Singh performs comprehensive transplant care including blood group incompatible kidney transplants, transplants in sensitised hosts, pediatric kidney transplants, and deceased donor transplants — with over 1000 successful transplants performed.
How can I slow the progression of kidney disease?
Plus icon
Control blood pressure and blood sugar, avoid NSAIDs, moderate protein intake (0.8 g/kg/day), reduce salt to 5 g/day, exercise regularly, maintain healthy weight, stop smoking, and take prescribed medications including ACE inhibitors, ARBs, SGLT2 inhibitors, and GLP-1 analogues as directed by your nephrologist.
